Love; much easier said than done right?

Like many, Caleb thinks he understands love. His concepts about the right time have made him reluctant to commit over the years, but what happens when the right one comes along?

When Caleb meets Nora, he makes the classic mistake of disregarding their bond as nothing but friendship. He’s torn between his perceptions of love against the realities of it, which only leads to a heart breaking parting.

Passing time teaches Caleb that love isn’t exactly what he believed it to be. Three years later, he embarks upon a mission to un-break the heart of the woman who has enlightened him.

However, in our Romeo’s case, the love of his life has other plans for him.

Witness the delight; of realising unconditional love, the struggles; to prove love and the courage; to do what’s best for the ones we love in Loving You Like A Rubber Band.

“Ava, wait!” I find myself having to chase after my, now to be an ex-girlfriend, in hopes that she will not end things like this.

I jog lightly to catch up with her, “Ava listen.” I request as I get within arm’s-length of her.

“No, you listen, Caleb!” She shouts before angrily turning around to face me; interrupting me. Her eyes are almost watering with frustration. “You always do this!”

“Wait, what?” I mutter; the words completely bi-pass my brain and come out of my mouth.

I always do this? I do WHAT? I am totally confused by what Ava is claiming here.

“I’m tired. I’m done.” She continues, “I can’t be conscious all the time when I’m with you. I can’t keep wondering whether I should say THIS or THAT, wonder if you’d appreciate the things I do or not; I can’t do this.”

“What do you mean?” I ask.

Just between you and me; I think I know what she’s about to say but I want to hear it from her. I want to get more out of her in an attempt to pinpoint what is bothering her.

She groans out loud in annoyance before explaining…

‘Loving You Like a Rubber Band’ is a decent first novel that was engaging enough for me to complete in one sitting. It is a gently told tale of best friends moving through loving each other to becoming lovers. There is something of the morality play and the didactic in the story’s exploration of idealised love. This is not necessarily bad but it should be balanced by a better exploration of the characters both of whom, but especially Nora come across as not fully three dimensional. Nevertheless the novel is light and humorous and there is something to be learned here.

    • Thank you Gavin! 😀

Considering I’m not much of a reader, Loving You Like a Rubber Band had me hooked till the end. Very well written in my opinion.

Romance junkies will definetely love this book! It is my new favorite! I love the fact that Nora is this new age strong woman. Girl power!

    • Yes, I didn’t want her to be the ‘damsel in distress’ type! :p

LYLARB on the surface is a easy going chick-flick type of book but underneath it all, Caleb (or the author rather) is trying to set an example. Time and time again people throw away their love too easily and via this book the author is trying to bring light to seriousness of that issue. Overall i thought it was funny, i liked that there was a sense of morality to the book and definitely kept my interest till the end. I would recommend it for sure.

Caleb and Nora are interesting characters, they both love each other but that doesn’t mean that they will figure that out at the same time! This book is basically a recollection of Nora and Caleb told from Caleb’s point of view.

Caleb doesn’t see it until it’s too late and right in the middle, you are thinking, just kiss her already dude! It was interesting to see just how close they could get before one would get cold feet. I loved how this story had a great ending!

I don’t want to say much more but I will say go Nora! You really showed him!

I thoroughly enjoyed this MODERN and fun romantic story. It was the kind of read I could settle in to my one hour commute to work on the train and just be immersed in a love story which kept me entertained before I started my day. I look forward to reading more short novels by Isra Tabassum.
